Cava's Spicy Hummus Recalled for Undeclared Sesame
Cava Foods, Inc. is recalling spicy hummus owing to the presence of unlabeled sesame. Allergen warnings and ingredient labeling are required by the FDA.
The FDA recall applies to eight-ounce tubs with a best-by date of August 19, UPC 89832800227, Lot# MD023804.
Mislabeled products were sold at Whole Foods Markets, Giant Foods, MOM's Organic Markets, and other independent merchants around the country.
Cava was notified by one retail store that hot labneh lids had been erroneously placed on spicy hummus containers.
Sesame is not listed as an allergy in the spicy labneh. Cava's lids list components and allergens, thus replacing them may cause allergic reactions.
Customers have not yet complained about the contamination caused by the changed lid. Recall on one's own initiative.
Hummus is made with tahini, which is sesame seed paste. Tahini may be the source of the Cava hot hummus sesame warning.
Labneh is a sesame-free Greek yogurt dip. Sesame is one of nine major allergens that must be listed on FDA ingredient labels.
Accidental ingestion results in rashes, edema, and vomiting. Anaphylaxis or respiratory difficulties may occur as a result.
Hummus containers were stocked in supermarkets beginning June 16. Cava hot hummus that has been mislabeled can be returned to the merchant for a full refund.
