Starbucks Accused Of "Manipulating" Mobile App Customers Into Paying More

A new consumer rights group complaint claims the corporation deceives rewards members with misleading digital design in its app.

A consumer rights alliance is pressing down on Starbucks' “unfair and deceptive practices” involving mobile app use.

A new Washington attorney general complaint from the Washington Consumer Protection Coalition alleges that these methods push Starbucks Rewards members utilizing Starbuck Cards.

The alliance filed the action on Dec. 19 alleging that Starbucks employs “dark patterns” to “trick or manipulate” its mobile app users by employing several misleading digital design aspects.

The organization alleges Starbucks prevents customers from spending tiny sums on their cards and from emptying their accounts.

Starbucks' mobile app limits Starbucks Card reloads to $10, according to the coalition's "dark patterns."

The Starbucks app automatically sets a default recharge value of $25 and displays $15 as the lowest, despite though the minimum is $10.

They further claim that Starbucks doesn't enable app users tip in unique amounts or divide payments using different payment methods, forcing them to utilize a Starbucks Card.
